Sitting at his inherited junk and old books shop in the middle of the market, he was cursing himself and his father over the fate and legacy he had received. He was thinking that what he got as inheritance was this shop where every day people come and drop off their most useless stuff — nobody ever leaves anything good behind. He was crying over his fate, thinking what kind of a life is this where you just mechanically keep working, go home at night, eat, sleep. Wake up in the morning and sit at the shop again. There’s not even a line of customers here — people either call you home, or if they have to come, they’ll come in their own sweet time. He’d just keep spinning in that same vicious circle.

But if he had turned around and looked at his own shop for a moment — there were old books sitting there, which may not give a degree but they give the same knowledge they were built to give. The seed of a revolution could still be sown.

Up until the 18th century, the Town Crier, the Telegraph Line Operator, the Oil Lamp Lighter — countless jobs like these that provided solid employment don’t exist today. People probably don’t even know that human beings were actually hired for such work. Looking at the boot puller hook image here, you can’t even imagine that there was once a whole thriving trade around it. Did you know that many things we are using right now will be gone from our lives by 2050? Things like car keys, TV remote controls, plastic debit/credit cards, USB flash drives, paper boarding passes, or the steering wheel from cars. And this is just a small example. What used to take centuries, science and invention have dramatically accelerated — and we will see these changes within our own lifetimes.

Now if you connect all the dots, you’ll realize that while continuous invention and scientific progress may improve human life, it will also demand new skills for employment, constant learning, and work you used to get paid ten times for might now pay a fraction of that. New jobs will keep replacing old ones — the question is, are we, like the junk shop owner, turning our face away from the path of acquiring new skills? Because if we are, we’ll keep cursing our fate, when all we need to do is turn around and look.

बिच बाज़ार रद्दी और पुराने किताबो की दुकान पर बैठ वह अपनी पायी हुई किस्मत और मिली विरासत को लेकर अपने आप को और अपने पिता को कोस रहा था। शोच रहा था की विरासत में यह दुकान मिली हैं जहा रोज़ लोग अपनी सबसे बेकार वास्तु आकर दे के जाते हैं, कोई अपनी अच्छी वस्तु नहीं छोड़ के जाते। वह रो रहा था अपनी किस्मत पर की ये भी क्या कोई जीना हैं जहा बस एक यंत्रवत काम करते रहना और रात को घर जा के खाना खा के सो जाना। सुबह उठाना और दुकान पर एके बैठ जाना। यहाँ तो लोगो की लाइन भी नहीं लगती, लोग या तो घर पे बुलाते है और अगर आना हैं तो अपनी फुरसत में आएंगे। बस वही दुश्चक्र (vicious circle) में फिरता रहेगा।

पर थोड़ा अगर पीछे मुडके देखता अपनी दुकान पर तो वह पुरानी ही सही कही किताबे पड़ी थी, जो डिग्री भले ही न दे पर ज्ञान तो वही देती, जिसके लिए वोह बानी थी। क्रांति का बीज तो बोया जा सकता था।

१८वी सदी तक घोषणाकर्ता (town crier), टेलीग्राफ लाइन ऑपरेटर (Telegraph Line Operator), रास्तो पे लगी बत्तीओ को दिया जलाने वाला (Oil Lamp Lighter) ऐसे अनगिनत काम जो अच्छा खासा रोजगार देते थे वो आज अस्तित्व में नहीं हैं। लोगो को पता भी न होगा की ऐसे किसी काम के लिए इन्सान भी रखे जाते थे। यहाँ पे दी गयी एक बूट पुलर हुक की इमेज देख के अंदाज़ा भी नहीं लगा सकते हैं की एक ज़माने में इसका एक विस्तृत कारोबार हुआ करता था। क्या आपको पता हैं की ऐसी बहोत सही चीजे जो आज हम इस्तेमाल कर रहे हैं वह २०५० तक हमारे जीवन से चली जाएगी ? जैसे की, कार key, टीवी रिमोट कंट्रोल्स, प्लास्टिक डेबिट/क्रेडिट कार्ड, USB फ्लॅश ड्राइव्स, पेपर बोर्डिंग पास, या स्टीयरिंग व्हील कार से। यह तो बस एक छोटासा उदाहरण हैं। पहले जो सदिया लगाती थी आज विज्ञानं और अविष्कार से गति बहोत बढ़ गयी है, जो हमें अपने जीवन काल में देखि जाएगी।

अभी सब कड़ियों को जोड़े तो पता चलेगा की अविरत आविष्कार और विज्ञानं के विकास से मानव जीवन भले ही अच्छा हो किन्तु रोजगार के लिए नया कौशल प्राप्त करना होगा, निरंतर नया सीखना होगा, और जो काम के लिए आप भुगतान लेते थे उसके दसवे भुगतान पे करना पड सकता हैं। नए रोज़गार पुराने रोज़गार की जगह लेते रहेंगे, सवाल ये हैं की क्या हम तो रद्दी वाले की तरह उस कौशल प्राप्त करने के रस्ते से मुँह फेर कर तो नहीं बैठे हैं ना? वरना हम भी अपने नसीब को कोसते रहेंगे जब की हमें सिर्फ मुडके देखना हैं।
